Latvia

Overview

There is a great need to supply food for the elderly and families with starving children in the poorest areas of Latvia. There is a multitude of thousands of families living captive in a cycle of poverty with little or no resources, to grab onto as a lifeline, to a better future. The rate of poverty in Latvia is the highest in Europe. The recent world economic crisis has only made the problem worse.

Those who are suffering the greatest aren’t living in saddened conditions because of bad choices resulting from addiction or poor life management skills. The families in the greatest despair are a result of a failed economy without enough to help it’s own people. Help is being offered on the government level but it just isn’t enough. Many live without electricity or heating in the harsh winters.

In the areas of Latvia Please Pass the Bread is led to help, the future looks bleak; many are just hoping to make it through the week. The children are suffering now and, it seems, will continue to live deprived as they get older. The resources for improvement just aren’t available. As the future unfolds many children will end up caught in the same cycle of poverty as their parents, but with an even greater lack of options.

How We Help

The support of Please Pass the Bread has been led to minister provision along side the churches within several communities. Partnering with the local church has given us insight into who is in need of help the most. Feeding starving children by establishing after school programs, and supplying food to the elderly, has become our priority in Latvia. In addition we have added a priority to aid in helping a group of families we have found to be in dire need of assistance.
