El Salvador

Overview

Intense and vicious gang violence has torn apart any notion of peace and safety for many living in El Salvador, and especially in the areas where Please Pass the Bread is supporting the needs of children in distress. It has been so bad lately that law enforcement isn’t even allowed to enter some regions for fear of life. The slum areas have been dubbed “The violent slums” due to the severity of the problem. The World Health Organization says the violence so high it is now considered an epidemic.

On a recent visit, a Pastor who runs one of the programs we sponsor explained how dangerous the place is. He said that the area was so dangerous, that even the police dare not enter the neighborhood. “I had been riding my bike home one evening and my tire hit something throwing me off the bike. When I got up off the ground, I realized that my bike had hit a dead body, no doubt murdered by gangs”.

Fear for safety and welfare surround the children living in the slums, with orphans being extremely vulnerable. El Salvador is suffering from a new wave of disappearances involving the youngest generations who have gone missing without any explanation. It is being linked to the increase in gang violence and activity. Suspect, as the reason: children being abducted to be sent abroad for adoption to generate revenue for the gangs.

Please Pass the Bread has stepped in to support ministries anchored in these dangerous communities. They effort in the cause to house and care for orphans, help children of the street, and those lacking any resource.

To minister in the some of the areas our partners operate takes unfailing courage, and unwavering trust, that the Lord’s hand will protect. Under the shadow of “The Almighty” these spiritual warriors head into a very real and dangerous war zone, sometimes risking their own lives, to care for the needs of children.

I guess the best way to sum up the bravery needed is with a quote from a recent article written. “”Life is worth nothing in this country. There is so much impunity. Killing someone is like killing a chicken.”

May the Lord be with our ministers and workers on the ground in El Salvador. They believe life is worth everything.

How We Help

In El Salvador, our many ministry partners, like the orphanage of Hope and Love, care so deeply about the value of family that they go the extra step to restore relationships with each child in their care.

Taking in orphaned, abused, abandoned and neglected children, Love & Hope provides shelter, safety, guidance, and education by sharing the love of Jesus in a family setting. And where the children under their care have families, Love and Hope makes it their mission to try and extend into those families. They work to restore broken relationships though counseling, therapy, visitations, and by providing ways for the family to be included in the children’s lives even while they are separated.

The goal of Love and Hope is for the children who enter the program to have healthy and happy relationships. This is a ministry that truly honors forgiveness and reconciliation guided by the love of Jesus.

We commend all our ministry partners in El Salvador for holding true to what really matters most when it’s all said and done – healthy, self sacrificing, God centered relationships with people through a Lord and Saviour who cares deeply for us.
