If a hungry child is within our reach we will feed them.
Testimony From the Field
Mathare slum, Kenya – The second largest slum in Nairobi
“I learned that God wants us to be good like Joseph in the Bible, who feared God, and God rewarded him” – Faith, 8 years old, Mathare slums, Kenya.
Faith is 8 years old. She attends Mathare Lights Education centre, the meal program is free and sponsored by Please Pass the Bread. Faith is enrolled in the PPtB program.
“Once Faith started eating better we discovered that Faith is a great learner and she loves school, but the conditions of poverty she faces at home still have a negative impact on her. One day, while she was absent, we went to Faith’s house and found she had been sent home because she had not paid school fees that term.
“Faith’s teacher found 5 green bananas on a stove cooking to feed a family of seven. She was very distraught by the situation. The children were starving. The school put a new rule into effect immediately. A child of the school will always eat. Even if they are sent home, the child will be allowed to come in at meal times to eat”, describes the PPtB coordinator for the area.
Faith’s family lives on an average income of $38 US monthly. The family is on the verge of starvation every day. Abduction into prostitution, gangs, drug addiction, or stricken by diseases are dangers waiting every day right outside the door. Faith and her family live in dire and treacherous poverty.
“It’s so sad for Faith at home. Inside her house, an old metal and wood shanty, she has to fear for safety, and outside the home, in addition to other illicit activity, is a place brewing illegal alcohol and creating a very dangerous environment”, continues the area coordinator.
Please Pass the Bread assures Faith and her siblings eat every day, we pray to Jesus for her protection.
“I know Jesus loves children like me” – Faith.
Faith was enrolled in the PPtB program beginning early last year and there has been a tremendous difference in her health and wellbeing. Faith is much healthier and stronger than this time last year.
“Now that I eat food in school my life is much better now and the other children in other schools don’t laugh at me anymore”, Faith says. “I like being in school because I am assured of love and I feel secure. I feel appreciated in school and I get to eat. I love praising Jesus and singing to him very much”.
Please pray for Faith. Her life has become better but there are still many uncertain circumstances she faces every day. She needs the protection of our heavenly Father and the loving arms of Jesus wrapped around her every moment. Pray for safety and deliverance from negative influences inside and outside the home.
